Potions for Flu Season

Flu season is coming, so it’s a good idea to have a few potions around both for prevention and healing.  How to bless them depends on your belief system/pantheon.  I recommend that you become observant of whoever your deity in charge of medicines and healing, as well as those in charge of disease, pestilence, viruses, etc. to increase the effectiveness of these.

Remember, the default instruction is to open the gate, consecrate your supplies and jars, do your prayer or chant, add ingredients mindfully, work mindfully, and consecrate the finished item.

Prevention Potion

This potion, drank daily, should prevent you catching colds or flu, or at least keep them from knocking you down too hard.  Just be aware though, that it can make you a carrier, meaning that you would carry a virus but have no symptoms.  Please be very aware of your body so that you don’t spread diseases to those more vulnerable.

You will need:

Instructions:

After opening your gate/circle and asking your deities for help to protect people from disease, put all ingredients except for the alcohol in a pot or large cauldron.

Heat very high until it comes to a boil, and then turn it down to low, and allow it to simmer for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Make sure that you are putting intent into your work.  Don’t get distracted by other things.  Sit or stand there with the pot, and focus on protecting people from illness.  Imagine the workings of the immune system, and that the potion will make the immune cells stronger, and the tissues healthier.

When it is done, let it cool.  Then pour it into a clean bowl, through a filter or sieve.

Then put in the alcohol.

Put your potion into jars and consecrate the finished work before closing them.

Notes:

Sore Throat Syrup

Bring to a boil and then simmer the anise, cinnamon, and lemon in the water for 20 minutes.

Then strain out the solids, put it back in a pot, add the olive oil and honey, and boil again for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Put it in a sterilized jar.

The Flootie  (Flu Tea)

You will need:

Instructions:

Put the ingredients in a big jar, and pour boiling water over all.

Cover, and let this steep and cool so that it’s not too hot to drink.

Mash everything with a potato masher, and then strain the liquid out into another cup or jar.

Serve the liquid to the sick person with your wishes for their wellness.

Home Made Vapor Rub

Not a potion, but deserving of mention is home made vapor rub.  When you are sneezy and achey, this helps you feel better.  Rub this into your chest and back.

Whip together very well, and keep in a handy jar.

Now here’s the old fashioned recipe from back before we could get essential oils easily in the pharmacy.

Take a big baby pine cone with resin oozing out of it, a pile of mint, and a pile of rosemary, and a bunch of broken up cinnamon in a pot.

Pour enough water in it to cover, plus that amount more.

Bring it to a boil, cover, turn down the heat to low, and let it simmer for an hour or two.

Take off the lid, and scoop out as much of the solid stuff as you can.

Bring it back up to a fast boil, and stir occasionally to reduce it until it is a thin sludge.

Turn the heat off, and let this cool.

Pour the sludge into a tray with cooking parchment or wax paper and let it dry and air out until it is kinda sticky, and it’s clear there’s little or no water left in it.

Mix this with some clarified lard or some other kind of grease.

Other possibilities of herbs to use in infusions:

Stinging nettle helps to clear up congestion.  Just make sure to boil and strain it well.  Boiling for a few minutes will take off the spines.

Clove can help to relieve mouth pain.  It may seem scary, but hot chili peppers can as well.  It hurts at first, but then it goes numb.  It helps wounds to heal as well, and fights internal bleeding like when you’ve coughed too much or sneezed too much.

Make home made candy to cure mouth sores with cayenne or hot chili peppers and sugar.  Mix, melt well with a tiny bit of water, and then pour onto a greased surface or tray with wax paper or candy molds.

A soup with wild lettuce can help a person with a cold or flu to sleep more soundly and cough less.  Chop finely and add to chicken soup.  It is kind of bitter, so don’t overdo it.

Spray an infusion of eucalyptus leaves, bay leaves, rosemary, and basil to make breathing easier for congested people.  You can also set a pot or cauldron to steam with these herbs.  Add cinnamon or pine to help kill germs floating around in the air.

Be well everybody!
