Protection From Floods

Example Flood ProtectionThe rain will fall. Storms will come. Floods will happen.

With the exception of a few special weather witches under special circumstances, there is no way these can be prevented. Even witches who are very good at weather management magic have an understanding with the forces of Nature that some things must be allowed to happen. There are some tradeoffs...

Flood protection using witchcraft is not an easy venture. There are still however, many ways for any practicing witch willing to put in the time, effort, and offerings to lessen the damage. You will need to start a relationship with your ancestral or adopted and local water and weather deities if you haven't already. For me, these include but are not limited to Eshu of the Sea, Olokun, Oya, Mama Sea Turtle, Njord, Freyr, Yam,Anat, and Baal. For you there may be others.

When I say start a relationship, I don't mean just occasionally adding them to your standard observances. I mean getting to know them. Take a bit of your time to learn of them, and perhaps different perspectives of them from other adherents. Learn what they like as offerings and when their auspicious dates and times are if they are known. Give within your reasonable ability regularly. Learn their symbols and how to call them. Ask them questions in your divination. Put some effort into it.

The purpose of this is not just to get you on good terms with them, but to align you with them. You will find that you will become more sensitive and notice things you didn't before. Once you get to the point that you have enough information to communicate with them, start using that for protection, and remember that prevention is a big part of protection.

Examples of amulets that you can use for protection are things with water deity symbols, hieroglyphs, ideograms, runes, or bindrunes. It is a good idea to have these in and around your home or the place you would like to protect. If you have weather luck, the area may be protected in the way that it is spared whatever devastation is happening in other areas. If not, it will at least draw the energy of the relevant forces of Nature to the area so that one may get warnings when the risk is not obvious.

Water, storm, and maritime related items can also be blessed to draw energy of related deities. Then of course there is the obvious statue or figurine of deities or water creatures, realistic and mythical.

Chants that help to align your soul and mind with the water element and related deities or archetypes may also be helpful in enhancing your "ear" for possible weather anomalies or seasonal or cyclical shifts.

Now here are some real life examples from my own practice. You may wish to do things differently, but I just want to show you how I go about things for the sake of inspiration.

Observance

I am observant to a few water and storm related deities as well as deities of chance and fortune. On Mondays I give special observance to Eshu, Master of the Gate between the spirit and physical realms as well as the Master of Fortune and Luck. This helps me to see opportunities and advantages, and notice things that may otherwise pass unnoticed. Sometimes he may also allow "happy accidents", causing one misfortune to avoid a greater misfortune. On Saturdays I give special observance to Oshun, a Goddess of sweet water. This helps me to be keen to things that will help to preserve my prosperity and assets, and to help me be sensitive to the water in my body, which often respond to changes in weather as well as phases of the moon. On Fridays, I give special observance to Oya, the Orisha of storms and change. This of course helps me align with weather changes and roll with the punches when a disaster or loss cannot be avoided.

Offerings and Aligning Actions

Almost every belief system has a "wheel of the year" based on the climate and weather patterns of its originating nation. These should be adhered to as well as one can. If you are not living in that place though, you must be aware of your local holidays and why they happen. It will be helpful to learn local customs as well.

For example, during the month leading up to the rainy season here in Israel/Canaan, it is considered a good deed that gains the favor of Anat to be generous towards soldiers, warriors, and first-responders. It helps to bring more rain and reduces the number of deaths from the inevitable storms. I make a point of keeping at least one lover who is a warrior, and feed my husband, a retired policeman, special offering meals regularly from October through February. I realized this was necessary at some point when we moved further up the Carmel mountain and I began falling down my entryway stairs every year during the rainy season. We children of Oya often learn these things through corporal punishment from the deities. Once I became observant to Anat in this way, I received the charisma to convince our landlord at the time to finally allow us to put some non-skid on the stairs.

During hurricane season, in the Caribbean, some sailors and fishers give food offerings to Guabancex to appease her. When the angle of a rudder or some little thing caught in one's peripheral vision can make the difference between life or death, you can understand why this is helpful.

Amulets, Talismans, and Fetishes

There are many things from many cultures made to protect homes and persons from floods and destruction by water. You can take your pick. A general duty charm for dealing well with water energies though, is aquamarine. It is one of the classics. Other crystals from which water aligning and protective items can be made are harricana/fairy stone, blue agate, and sea glass or other stones that have been smoothed by rivers or the sea.

Be advised that once you link a fetish, amulet, or talisman with a deity, you must become observant to that deity. The consequences of not doing so can range from being unconsciously driven to certain acts to compel observance (if you have very active protections) to receiving corresponding punishments for being lazy or disrespectful (if your protections are weaker). Neither of those would be pleasant.

If you are not sure of how to go about being observant to a deity, consult elders within their traditional belief systems. If none exist out of the closet, and they are impossible to find, or they are truly extinct, approach them through your or their local Gatekeeper, and avoid making any symbols or other physical "anchors" for them until you are given some that are safe to use. Trust the deities to make themselves known if they wish for humans to carry on their cults or egbes.

Chants, Breathing, Stirring, and Dancing

Wind and water move. To align with them, you must also move and use your breath mindfully. A significant proportion of your physical body is water, and you breathe, so you can understand how this will align you with water and wind deities.

Youtube and other music and video sites are full of teachers of meditation, chants to various deities, and so on. Use these resources to raise energy.

While bathing, use this opportunity to stir water and listen to your water deities.

Blow bubbles in your drink from time to time, or go outside with some soap bubbles and blow bubbles for the glory of your air and wind deities.

Make love in the water.

A Global Tradition

Every year on or around the 31st of December, millions of people in west Africa and the diaspora give offerings to Yemaya and Olokun. Many if not most iles welcome people of any belief system to join them in these offerings. You are not under any obligation except to chip in for expenses for the ebbo, so long as you are respectful during the ceremony.  Even if your pantheon is different, it is a good idea that if your group does not have a special yearly offering to the sea, to participate in someone's.

Since Eshu or a Gatekeeper is always called first in these events, your sentiments and energy will go where it is supposed to. At the point in the dimensions where the divisions of human cultures dissolve, the sea receives your prayers and gives the feedback of blessings.

I hope this article has given you some ideas on how to do what you can to protect against floods and other water based disasters. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also feel free to add your own ideas, practices, and experiences.

Blessings and Ashe!
